We are almost done with this six week session. In Music I we have been working on counting to 100, staying w/ the metronome. Each week we try 3 times and take the highest number. We have reached 45! We have learned the basics of rhythm - pulse, meter, bar lines and measures. This past week I introduced note values and will play a game with LEGOS and note values this coming week. I'm sure this will be a hit seeing that the class is mostly boys!!
We used Q-tips for bar lines a couple weeks ago. Apparently some of your children came home with clean ears that day. The older class was surprised to find used bar lines!
We will be learning about a different instrument family from the orchestra each session. This six weeks it has been the String Family. We read from Story of the Orchestra, write a few notes, and color a picture of the week's instrument while listening to a recording on youtube. Some of the conversations that take place during this time are most entertaining. I recieved a full theological discourse this last week after one student asked if the cello player we were watching was still living. ( I truthfully answered he was not.) Fifteen minutes later - I think I will make sure and find living musicians from now on.
Our field trip for strings was a free concert at Texas Wesleyan to see members of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra present a String Quartet by Faure' and Saint-Saen's Carnival of the Animals. We had a really good time and hope more can join us in the future.
